The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) was established in January 2000 by the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act (MCSIA) of 1999, P.L. 106-159. The mission of FMCSA is to save lives and reduce injuries by preventing truck and bus crashes. Two performance measures are used to monitor agency progress towards the desired safety outcomes: (1) number of fatalities in large truck-related crashes, and (2) number of injured persons in large-truck related crashes. This plan represents a brief summary of the policies and programs that FMCSA will undertake in FY 2002.
