The report presents the results of an experimental study conducted at the Naval Air Advanced Training Command at Corpus Christi, Texas. The study was initiated in October, 1949 to provide information on the following questions: Can flight time be saved by the use of Operational Flight Trainers (OFTs); Can the proficiency of the student be improved by the use of OFTs; How can OFTs be used effectively; From a design standpoint, what characteristics of an OFT seem most essential. Because of the numerous variables interacting in this complex situation, a controlled experiment was established to secure the required information. Two trainers were used, the PBM (two-engine seaplane) and the PB4Y (four-engine land plane) Operational Flight Trainers. A review of previous studies in this area, discussion of the problem, description of the training situation, the experimental design, the training syllabi, and the grading system are provided in the report.
