A radial piston motor was used in the servo system of a launcher turntable. The motor's internal friction forces were analyzed to calculate the effect of shaft angle and back pressure on developed torque. Equations to model torque and flow losses over the motor's whole operating range were derived. Computer models of the hydraulic motor, (rotary) load and servo amplifier were developed. A test rig was used to investigate the effect of shaft angular position, pressure rise rate, and inlet and outlet pressure on available starting torque. The motor operates with high efficiency under normal operating conditions and rotates smoothly at very low speeds. The frequency response is similar to that of the standard drive unit and the motor can rotate the turntable very smoothly at low speeds under closed loop control.
