The results of a program evaluating a potentially lower cost driver air bag system are presented. The nonelectrical air bag retrofit system integrates the complete air bag, crash sensing, and inflation functions within a single module mounted over the steering wheel hub. Changes to the steering wheel and column and the addition of knee bolsters were needed to fully adapt the retrofit. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contracted to develop a police car retrofit driver protection air bag system employing the unique Breed all mechanical sensor/initiator. The air bag system was demonstrated to be timely and effective in its protective function in frontal pole and angular barrier crashes and to protect the driver, who was otherwise unrestrained, in perpendicular barrier crashes up to 35 mph. Predictive analytics compared favorably with results measured in tests.
