A survey is presented relating existing knowledge of jet flow and mixing, including turbulence, in the continuum regime of fluid dynamics, to the afterburning rocket exhaust stream. Recent experimental information on ionization in flames is outlined, and consequences for ionization in rocket exhausts suggested. (Author)
