A survey of passenger car tires in the western United States was conducted. The purpose of the study was to provide data to the U.S. Bureau of Standards which would be helpful in creating a national tire quality grading system for passenger car tires. Three basic goals were desired: (1) to determine the actual condition of passenger car tire usage on U.S. highways, (2) to analyze the nature and frequency of manufacturing defects that develop in new or slightly used tires, and (3) to analyze samples of tire tread rubber discarded along highways. Field survey teams were organized in ten strategic locations to collect data from traveling motorists, and the resulting data were analyzed by computer techniques. During the 7 months of data gathering, a total of 45,540 tires was evaluated, thus achieving a sufficiently large data sample to establish statistically reliable tire usage trends. (Author)
