The report presents the results of an experimental investigation intended to increase present knowledge of the performance characteristics of marine jet-flap propellers. Previous investigations have indicated that the performance characteristics of such devices can be altered, depending on the location of the jets. The results of the study indicate that a reduction of thrust and torque can be realized using the system described. The feasibility of using the jet flap as a device to obtain astern thrust from an ahead rotating propeller is discussed. It is concluded that the jet flap is not a practical means for stopping or backing ships. (Author)
