The enclosed report provides an overview and the objectives of 22 payload activities sponsored by NASA on the first, flight of a SPACEHAB Space Research Laboratory to be launched on STS-57 in June 1993. These activities are accomplished through flight and support services leased from SPACEHAB, Inc., through the Commercial Middeck Augmentation Module (CMAM) contract managed by the CMAM Project Office at the Johnson Space Center. Through the operations of SPACEHAB-01, NASA will obtain flight services for 15 payloads and support hardware related to the commercial development of space and emanating from the NASA Centers for the Commercial Development of Space (CCDS) plus one from the Langley Research Center. Other payloads come from the Johnson Space Center, the Lewis Research Center and the Marshall Space Flight Center. These payloads and their general objectives are described in this report. Inquiries may be directed to the NASA Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology (OACT) Flight Programs Division. This first flight of SPACEHAB is an important step in the development of commercially available space infrastructure, as well as the accomplishment of an important set of investigations. With a primary focus on the commercial development of space, these activities are expected to lead to data or products with commercial benefits for the well- being of our citizens and the Nation s economy.
