A number of shipping companies are pre-loading major portions of their cargoes in containers, road trailers, on pallets and flats and on small open yard type trailers in order to reduce the costs of cargo handling and reduce ship turnaround time. The volume investigates the feasibility of using these methods on catamarans where the large deck areas potentially available may be exploited to reduce the time and effort required to load and off-load. Loading methods are discussed and typical loading times together with cost estimates are developed for several catamaran types and sizes. These in turn are compared with loading rates and costs of equivalent monohull cargo vessels. (Author)
