This report documents the results of a study to determine what actions the Air Force should be taking to remain compatible with the National Airspace System as it evolves in the future. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), through implementation of the Upgraded Third Generation Air Traffic Control System, will be requiring new avionics functions in aircraft which operate in the Air Traffic Control system. A large number of Air Force aircraft regularly operate in the Air Traffic Control system and so are affected by changes to its structure. The purpose of this study was to determine those FAA plans or programs which will impact avionics requirements, to analyze the major new avionics development plans of the Air Force, and to determine the interface problems which will then exist for Air Force aircraft operation in the National Airspace System.
