Solid propellant rocket technology has stimulated the development of many areas in applied mechanics: viscoelasticity, mechanical behavior of composite materials, numerical analysis, and nonlinear continuum mechanics. The feedback has been very rewarding; much of the theoretical and experimental research has found practical application in the design of solid propellant rocket motors. Some of the work which is presently thought to be too esoteric will find application in the future. Among the dynamic problems that deserve further study are dynamic effects arising from the finite length of the grain-casing system and from noncircular geometry of the port. The interaction of the combustion process and the mechanical vibrations of the solid rocket, in particular as related to acoustic instability, should also be investigated further. Finally, few dynamic problems with large amplitude deformations and possible application to solid propellant rockets have been solved. (Author)
