The document is a statistical report of USAF aircraft damaged by collisions with birds during 1969. There were 338 such occurrences -- 25 fewer than in 1968. Two of these collisions were classified as accidents compared with three accidents the previous year. One, a major accident, proved fatal to the pilot and resulted in loss of a jet trainer. In this case the bird penetrated the windscreen incapacitating the pilot. Windscreen/canopy strikes continue to be the greatest hazard to aircrews -- in three other windscreen penetrations, four pilots received minor injuries. As in previous years a substantial number of birds were ingested by engines. In fact, more than one-third of the strikes involved engines. Many of these engines subsequently required depot-level repair while some strikes dictated mission aborts because of engine shutdown. (Author)
