Four vehicle crash tests were conducted on a Highway Crash Cushion constructed of corrugated steel pipe. In two crash tests, the barrier did not perform as intended. The barrier buckled in the vertical plane causing the vehicle to ramp and vault upward. The objective of this study was to develop modifications which would eliminate the vehicle ramping or vaulting. These modifications were to be accomplished without affecting the excellent redirection characteristics of the crash cushion. These objectives were accomplished and verified in full-scale crash tests. In addition, a corrugated metal pipe arch section was used as a soft nose piece. Static crush tests and dynamic pendulum tests were conducted on corrugated metal pipe to develop force-deformation properties for designing such crash cushions.
