Limited system tests were conducted during a 58.7-flight hour evaluation of the UH-1N helicopter armament system. These tests were conducted at Edwards AFB, California to evaluate aircraft/weapons compatibility, weapon functioning and weapons delivery accuracy. The UH-1N armament subsystems tested included the M93 7.62mm minigun, XM94 40mm grenade launcher and LAU-59/A 2.75-inch rocket launcher. The armament system functioned in a reliable and satisfactory manner and the three subsystems tested were found to be basically compatible with the helicopter. Technical orders covering the armament system and associated equipment were found to be inadequate. Accuracy was unsatisfactory when firing from a hover. The armament system was effective against point targets in the pilot-fired mode at airspeeds above 30 KIAS. Gunner-fired weapon modes were effective against both point and area targets at airspeeds above 30 KIAS. Inability to predict exact impact of the 40mm grenade projectiles precluded their use as a close support weapon in the gunner-fired mode. The XM60 sight was found to be barely acceptable. Deficiencies were noted in the location and functioning of the armament control panel. The dive delivery required for pilot-fired weapons necessitated special techniques for aircraft control and aiming. (Author)
