In June 1978 an engine room simulator was put in operation at the Institute for Mechanical Constructions of the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) in Delft, the Netherlands. The main reason for its development was to obtain a facility that could be used in the training of ship engineers in the safe and economic operation of steam turbine machinery. This paper discusses the simulator and the training programme and the experience gained. A research programme into fault-management and into simulator training effectiveness being carried out now is briefly described. In addition interactive operation of TNO's ship's bridge simulator and engine room simulator is reported.
