F Street Plaza is a demonstration project undertaken in a two-block section of the principal shopping street in downtown Washington, D.C. The principal objective of this demonstration was to redesign a street to serve primarily the pedestrians' needs where a mall was not feasible and where vehicular traffic had to be maintained. The principal elements of the design are a paved median, twenty feet wide, which separates opposing vehicular traffic movements and provides an attractive area for pedestrians, and a total of ten pedestrian crosswalks in the two block demonstration area, to increase interaction among the establishments on both sides of the street.
