Results are presented of various hardware and software studies to determine the attitude of satellites in high altitude (greater than 500 nmi) orbits. A technology survey was conducted to determine the state of the art in attitude reference systems and sensors. Six attitude reference system conceptual designs are hypothesized and parametric performance analyses conducted to determine their performance capabilities. Performance sensitivities for various sensor and filter combinations are presented, and possible areas for technology improvements are suggested. (Author)
