The procedures were developed so that people without technical training will be able to assess the exposure of a housing site to present and future noise conditions. The only materials required are a map of the area, a ruler (straight edge), a pencil, and perhaps a 100-ft tape measure. The assessment is presented as an evaluation of the site's exposure to three major sources of noise -- aircraft, roadways, and railways. The evaluation is given in terms of acceptability categories.
