The Space Sextant-High Altitude Navigation System (SS-HANS) study was to prepare a preliminary design of this system and to demonstrate its performance thru detailed Monte-Carlo digital simulation. Not only did the design meet all its requirements, but of as much or more significance, the Space Sextant design has inherent accuracies that will permit design of an attitude reference and pointing system that will have more accuracy than any in existence or under development. The SS-HANS was designed to satisfy the highest levels of autonomy by onboard determination of spacecraft position in inertial space. The system was also to be designed to operate for a period of 5 years in a severe nuclear environment and on spacecraft that have attitude limit cycles and that maneuver. User applications of this design could range from deep space near-planet navigation to autonomous operation of strategic and tactical space systems. The space sextant would allow attitude control to within 0.1 arc sec (0.5 micron rad).
