The application of MLS (microwave landing systems) to provide increased operational flexibility and improved capacity in the terminal area is discussed. The performance characteristics of the various classes of CTOL aircraft which influence terminal area flight path design are identified and documented. Terminal area operational concepts and flight path families for use in the MLS environment are developed, and examples of special noise abatement paths are discussed. The implications upon cockpit equipment of flying flexible paths in the MLS environment are addressed, and the performance of current flight control systems in tracking segmented paths is examined.
