The first National Conference on Maritime Research and Development was held at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, July 7-24, 1969. The Conference was sponsored by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The objectives of the Conference were two-fold: First, to obtain the broadest possible base of participation by the marine community in outlining the requirements and recommendations for a long-term Maritime Research and Development program. Secondly, to identify such recommendations in quantitative depth to permit review in depth and to allow the Maritime Administration to integrate specific recommendations into an implementable Research and Development program.
