The report provides general guidelines for use in the identification of suburban travel patterns, alternative routing structures, and methods of evaluation appropriate for suburban transit route structures. The report includes a discussion of the use of secondary sources to establish travel patterns, modal choice, and the socioeconomic characteristics of the users. Routing structures discussed include radial, ubiquitous, grid, and four kinds of timed transfer: simple, pulsed schedule, lineup, and neighborhood pulse. It also includes some discussion of the use of indicators to measure system effectiveness. The report should be especially valuable to transit and transportation planners in suburban areas.
