The report describes the results of work concerned with the electromagnetic compatibility of motor vehicle electronic systems and vehicle-borne radio transmitters. An assessment was made of the intensities of the electromagnetic fields that occur on and around a vehicle fitted with a transmitter. All the measurements were made using swept frequency transmitter sources of low output power and simple aerials. The measured values of field strength were then scaled up in the ratios of powers and aerial gains of the test transmitter to those of transmitters in current use. The measurements of field strength indicated that fields in excess of 50 volt/meter may be established at a 2 meter distance from a vehicle with a 25 watt transmitter. In the passenger compartment, however, the field may exceed 100 volt/meter in certain locations.
