A state of the art review of current electric vehicle technology in New Zealand and overseas is provided. The role of electric vehicles in New Zealand, with regard to local vehicle use patterns and the availability of alternative transport fuels, is determined. An economic assessment of electric vehicle applications in comparison to other vehicles is prepared. The national benefit of electric vehicle utilization is assessed. Further research, development, and demonstration requirements to define the potential of, and implementation strategies for electric vehicle use in New Zealand are identified. Results are presented and discussed.
