Visible distress in the concrete pavement of Interstate I-80 in Pennsylvania, especially between White Haven and Stroudsburg, indicates the possibility that many trucks, particularly 5-axle trucks, may be loaded beyond permissible weights. A pilot study was implemented to determine the feasibility of using a bridge superstructure on I-80 to determine the axle and gross weights of 5-axle trucks crossing the bridge at highway speeds, preferably without driver awareness. A main and a backup system were developed to weigh 5-axle trucks using one of the spans of the Bartonsville Bridge on I-80 near TR33. The results from the main system indicated that about 33 percent of the axles of 5-axle trucks traveling eastbound over the Bartonsville Bridge during the sample period exceeded permissible loads.
