The probable evolution of fuel prices, world population, total energy demand, energy sources and transport system competition is analyzed. The sort of aircraft that will be required include medium range transport aircraft, long range aircraft, and aircraft for the third world. The technological trends are examined with particular reference to (1) the turbofan engine; (2) weight saving through structural design optimization and use of composite materials; and (3) fly-by-wire controls. It is concluded that the principal revolution to come results directly or indirectly from electronics and computer processing.
