The use of lifting potential flow techniques for the calculation of surface ship maneuvering forces in both calm water and waves is presented and demonstrated. By properly treating the trajectory of vorticity shed from salient hull features of slender ships, non-linear forces and moments can be captured using potential flow theory. This approach offers an accurate and rapid turn-around calculation, relative to RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes) approaches, of maneuvering forces in both calm water and waves.
