This article reviews the results and methods associated with model tests in waves on seagoing tug-barge units. It considers the analysis of the observed phenomena which is based on experience gained from physical model tests carried out at the NSMB, the Wageningen/Ede Laboratories of the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN).

The results presented in this paper are based upon a limited number of model experiments and must be applied only with proper reserve. Although the present state of the art is that tests are still the only realistic method of predicting the behaviour and the loads that occur in the connection of a proposed tug-barge unit, some theoretical and mathematical developments and possibilities are discussed for future applications.
