Two substantial ship hull roughness surveys at the beginning and end of the present decade show some improvement in surface condition of new ship hulls and ships in service. Equally there has been a substantial improvement in anti-fouling performance due to the introduction of ablative anti-foulings over the decade. It is shown that U.K. fleet operators are saving themselves about £30M per year due to their greater care in bottom maintenance resulting in smoother surfaces over the decade. At least as much again has been saved due to improved anti-fouling provision.
