Measurements have been made of the axial wake fraction over the complete propeller disc on a 1/120th scale model of a container ship in a recirculating water channel. The results have been compared with similar measurements over one half of the propeller disc on two larger models in a towing tank. An analysis of the results shows that the effects of asymmetry in the flow are significant and can be as large as the effects on the wake due to model scaling. It is concluded that in all future work wake surveys must be made over the complete propeller disc area to determine the effects of asymmetry of the flow.
