The simulated vehicle allows engineers to verify the system integration of components without the need for a prototype vehicle. The electronic control units may be given simulated conditions that would otherwise be very expensive or awkward to affect, for example high altitude, freezing air intake, or rotating toothed wheels with the incorrect number of teeth. In every case the controller area network (CAN) may be monitored to see if the different systems are communicating, and whether or not the conditions have been correctly identified and acted upon. A tool of this nature is very valuable and is being progressed within Rover to maximise the benefits. The simulation project performed by Rover for petrol engine modelling is aimed at reducing the development time. (3 pages)
