This paper describes the work done under the Traffimatics1 project to build a real world wireless communications testbed that could be used by moving vehicles to communicate traffic, road, weather, diagnostic and entertainment information. The project started in 2003 and at that time it was decided to base the wireless communications on IEEE 802.11 standard. The reason for that choice was based on the rapid uptake of the standard during the time which suggested that it would be a technology to not only achieve widespread proliferation, but to also experience fast evolution (e.g. 802.1 lp).
