The Driver Information and Traffic Management Division of the Department of Regions (DETR) commissioned a wide-ranging investigation into the potential to extend the use of above ground detectors (AGDs) as an alternative to inductive loops in non-motorway vehicle detection applications. At its final stages, the project has drawn on the views of existing and potential users, information from AGD manufacturers and data from independent technology evaluations in an attempt to match the rapidly developing capabilities of AGDs to the applications in which they offer benefits. The ultimate goal of the project information that will enable the DETR to provide guidance to AGD users. A final report has been prepared, covering the principal issues associated with the use of AGDs. This includes an AGD applications guide - a source of reference information covering the practical details and cost benefits of using AGDs in the most important non-motorway vehicle detection applications.
