SCOOT is being continuously enhanced by its developers and the latest set of enhancements has been assembled to produce version 4. The new feature that is expected to be of most interest to traffic managers is the online estimation of vehicle emissions of pollutants. These estimates are based on a model developed under contract to the UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR). The ASTRID database can be used to store these estimates and allow historic patterns of emissions to be analysed. Several enhancements have been made to the cycle time optimiser to increase its responsiveness to traffic and to traffic managers' commands. New logic has been added to use information from existing stopline loops where it is not possible (affordable) to install detectors in the normal SCOOT position.
