The paper gives an account of some operating experiences with Diesel-electric rail-cars. A brief description of the original rail-cars bought by the Buenos Ayres Western Railway is followed by an account of the services operated and the results obtained with them. Information is given regarding the maintenance and inspection of equipment, and the training of drivers is discussed. Some of the initial equipment defects and the means of overcoming them are described and a brief reference is made to the economics of the subject. Although the author has not had direct experience with the Diesel-electric trains running in Ceylon, a description of these trains and an account of the services operated by them have been obtained and are included in order to widen the scope of the paper. There is also a note on the original 450-h.p. Diesel-electric train which was purchased the Sao Paulo Railway in Brazil. Finally, the advantages derived from electric drive are mentioned and some comparisons based on experience with electric and mechanical transmissions are included. The paper deals only with the transmission systems, no details of engine performance being included.
