Since it opened in 1997, Nissan's engine and transaxle facility at Decherd, TN, has been setting the standard for flexibility, efficiency and cleanliness for the Japanese automaker. With the high level of automation associated with its flexible production lines, the plant has managed to eliminate any buffer inventory or holding stock. By using flexible transfer lines (FTL), the plant is able to easily convert to multiple stations and the need for accumulation is greatly reduced. The plant also uses synthetic coolant and a mist collection system that has excellent durability and contributed to the overall cleanliness of the facility.
