The fire on board freight shuttle mission 7539 on the night of 18/19 November 1996 was the most serious incident to have occurred at Eurotunnel since it first opened for commercial service in May 1994. The incident tested Eurotunnel's safety, personnel and operational management systems to the limit and there was no doubt that there were certain failings in these systems. This paper examines the recommendations of the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority (CTSA) following the fire for the Eurotunnel rail control centre and the measures that have since been implemented.
