Strategic traffic control offers the opportunity to make better use of the network by re-routing traffic using variable message signs. The first strategic management system is operational in the Kent Corridor and a significantly larger system is now being installed in the motorway network between the M25 and Birmingham and Nottingham (The Birmingham Envelope). The necessary support tools for strategic management are being developed in parallel with the first implementations. The development and establishment of strategic traffic control centres will provide the platform for effective and efficient strategic management and control over large sections of the network. They will provide the focus for future development of interurban network control applications. Strategic control centres are a natural interface with new and improved services to drivers being developed and offer opportunities for public/private partnerships.
