This paper discusses the current Inmarsat Aeronautical Satellite Communications system and the changes brought about due to the Inmarsat III satellites. The effect on low Earth orbit and medium Earth orbit satellite communication systems is discussed along with the future of lower cost data systems. The transition from informal usage of satcom in the cockpit to formal air traffic control is described as is the development of passenger services. (9 pages)
