All predictions about the future involve a certain amount of guesswork. The author introduces a process that helps to channel this guesswork and then discusses what appears to be `over-the-horizon' in the CCTV road surveillance market. The author predicts that the closed nature of CCTV systems will disappear, service providers will make more traffic information available to motorists, multi-purpose cameras will become available and used at strategic locations, and an open-networked TV (ONTV) system is likely to play a major role in automatic detection and traffic monitoring over the majority of the UK's major roads.
