Previous emphasis on the car as a symbol of personal freedom has been replaced with a recognition that it is not practical to accommodate the increasing car population in our towns and cities. There has also been growing concern with environmental, safety and sustainability issues. The public are now being encouraged to reduce their use of cars for short journeys, many of which could be made as a pedestrian. A growing recognition of the importance of improving pedestrian facilities has coincided with the emergence of intelligent signal controllers linked to devices which are able to monitor vehicle and pedestrian movement. In these circumstances it is appropriate to consider changes to operating strategies for midblock signalled pedestrian crossings with the objective of improving pedestrian amenity. In this paper the main concern is with midblock signal controlled vehicle actuated pedestrian crossings which are operated in areas subject to a speed limit of 30mph.
