The existing Phase 1 of the Manchester Metrolink was commissioned as one of the first UK tram systems in 1992. Consisting of 62km of track, 32 stations and 26 trams it was innovative in its design using disused British Rail track to connect the suburbs of Bury to the North and Altrincham to the South, to the city of Manchester. A street running section connects the North and South through the city centre and also links with Manchester's major mainline stations, Piccadilly and Victoria. As part of the regeneration of the Salford docks area the Phase 2 10km spur has been built providing convenient transport to the businesses in that area. This spur also connects the area of Eccles to the West of Manchester and provides a transport link for the newly built Lowry Centre and other leisure activities. To support the addition of the extra 10km of track, a further six light rail vehicles, 11 tram stops and three substations were required. As the signalling and telecommunications turnkey subcontractor the total Adtranz scope was for colour pan, tilt and zoom cameras, public address, staff telephones, passenger emergency call points and passenger information signs at the tram stops. A vehicle recognition system was used for the street signalling allowing the trams to operate on both the new and original infrastructure and a new interlocking was provided at Cornbrook, at the intersection of Phase 1 and 2. A new control and command system was provided at the central operation and maintenance centre to interface with both the existing Phase 1 infrastructure and the new Phase 2 system. Operations are facilitated with a fully integrated supervisory and control system (S and CS) as well as an integrated voice services system providing the operators with an integrated touch screen user interface for all voice communications. The paper concentrates on the S and CS in the control room and the implementation strategy. (3 pages)
