Even today, traffic collision is one of the major fatality reasons Worldwide especially in middle-income countries having dense traffic with limited or insufficient infrastructure. Moreover, according to “2022 Road Traffic Injuries” report of World Health Organization, more than half of traffic crash fatalities are from vulnerable people such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Blind-spot of the vehicles is still one of the key factors in these collisions. Although advanced safety systems have been recently introduced, incorporating expensive equipment like Lidar or high-resolution cameras, identifying vulnerable users remains a difficult challenge, particularly when the line of sight is obstructed. To tackle this problem, we suggest utilizing ultra-wideband(UWB) outdoor localization to detect cyclists and motorcyclists in blind spots. Our proposed method provides a cost-effective solution that does not require additional hardware, as we assume that vulnerable users' mobile phones can support UWB communication. In this demo, we both show simulation results comparing different localization techniques and architect a simple test-bed using COTS hardware supporting UWB links with Android devices.
