Virtual coupling as an emerging technology has received many concerns due to its advantages of expanding railway transportation capacity and coupling flexibility according to transport demand. However, its application faces a major challenge of reducing the safe distance between trains without compromising safety. To address this issue, a relative operation-based train separation model (ROS+) has been proposed. The model reduces the safe distance between two trains by predicting the boundary of all potential time-position trajectories of the preceding train, which involves the reachability problem of a hybrid system. To reduce the range of the envelope that covers all time-position trajectories, the operation controller of the preceding train is formalized into a hybrid automaton whose reachable set can be computed. Several simulations have been designed to evaluate the performance of the model, and the results demonstrate that by applying the model, the safe distance between two virtually coupled trains can be reduced by an average of 6.48%.
