Line-defect waveguides with three or more removed lines will usually have many simultaneous propagation modes in the frequency range of interest; it is desirable that most of the optical power be coupled to modes with useful propagation characteristics. In this work, simulation results are shown in which slow and highly-dispersive propagation is achieved in a three-line-defect (W3/sup (K)/) waveguide, by preferentially exciting specific modes at the waveguide input.
