This article presents a 3D analytical method to model induced eddy currents in the surface-mounted permanent magnets of axial flux machines. High-power and high-speed permanent magnet machines with enhanced power density are used for electrical power and propulsion systems in aerospace and airplane applications. The magnet eddy current losses are mainly caused by the time harmonics of the inverter and converter, which cause the overheating and demagnetization of magnets. A sophisticated computational model is developed to calculate induced eddy currents in the permanent magnets. The radial and circumferential magnet segmentations are considered in the 3D analytical method, which are used for magnet loss reduction. Two high-speed and high-power axial flux permanent magnet machines with distributed winding are chosen to analyze eddy currents and simulations of the magnet losses. The reaction fields of induced eddy current in the permanent magnets are also considered in 3D analytical modeling. The analytical calculation results of magnet losses are compared with the 3D finite element method to evaluate the accuracy.
