As a representative structure, the cantilever beam has been studied under sinusoidal or random vibration tests, of which the nonlinear dynamic feature has been discussed comprehensively. However the responses of a cantilever beam under mixed mode of vibration loads, such as sine-on-random, random-on-random, sine-on-random-on-random, are rarely investigated experimentally. Therefore, various vibration tests of a cantilever beam made of titanium alloy were conducted including sine sweep, random, and the aforementioned mixed modes. In the sine-on-random test including natural frequencies as sinusoidal components, nonlinear dynamics occurred that response significantly amplified at the double, triple of first order natural frequency and specific values around the second order. But there were no such magnifications in narrow-band random on wide-band random excitation test, and the result of sine-on-random-on-random was similar to the sine-on-random experiment. Consequently, the resonant sinusoidal components caused nonlinear responses of the cantilever beam. The nonlinear dynamic feature is noteworthy in mechanical design.
