The present study addresses the requirement for an increased emphasis on user-centred design principles in the development of ADAS through the development of new methodologies, equipment and specification of the cognitive activities associated with driving in complex road situations. Experimental investigations involving the Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP) driver assessment unit will enable a theoretical model of cognition in complex road situations to be constructed for standard and non-standard drivers. This will contribute significantly to our knowledge and understanding of complex behaviour in driving. The data collected will be used to produce a database of driver norms for the variables specified.
