Electrification of the transport sector is well underway, with large legislative and economic pressures driving the private passenger industry transition. In 2030 we are expected to see the end of petrol and diesel vehicle sales in the UK, pushing consumers to make this switch, a transition that rural motorists will also be affected by. This UK wide uptake of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has led to concerns over the capabilities of current grid infrastructure capacity, should high adoption rates be reached. These concerns are only exacerbated in rural areas due to typically weaker infrastructure when compared to the urban counterpart. An EV Charging Model, based on a Travel Demand Model, combined with substation meter readings was used to analyse the grid impact, failure points and forecasted timelines until this large scale EV adoption scenario could become a reality.
