System requirements for high bandwidth communications often require spatial filtering to achieve high performance. These systems have an increasing need for spatially steering the system transmit or receive energy to support optimal communications signal path, interference rejection, implement specific spatial coverage and perform other functions that require spatial filtering. This paper considers spatial filtering of high bandwidth communications systems from the standpoint of Wideband Digital Beamforming at the element level and implementation of such features using FPGAs. The focus of the paper is with respect to design and implementation of digital beamforming wideband communications waveforms using FPGAs. Design data for wideband digital beamforming structures using FPGAs is provided in the paper as well as reference circuits for implementation. Finally, an example wideband digital beamforming design is provided based on implementation in a Xilinx UltraScale FPGA. The wideband digital beamforming example is provided to illustrate the concepts discussed in the paper and is intended to provide the design perspective from the point of view of implementation complexity and required hardware.
